What is an areal flood watch?

An areal flood watch is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for flooding in a specific geographic area. This type of watch is issued when widespread flooding is possible, but not yet certain. It serves as a heads up for residents and officials to prepare for potential flooding and take precautions to keep themselves and their property safe. Areal flood watches typically cover a larger area than flash flood watches, as they are focused on the threat of rising water levels in rivers, streams, and low-lying areas. If conditions worsen and flooding becomes imminent, the watch may be upgraded to a flood warning.
